Cookie the Cop The Story of Cookie the Cop

How did Cookie the Cop become a member of the Cook's family? In the 60's, an executive from WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama, approached John Cook about producing a children's program on television. A Cook's salesperson would be the host.

The station manager's idea was to have a clown for the show, and then Mr. Cook suggested a Keystone Cop to represent protection. At the meeting, the name "Cookie the Cop" originated.

Cookie appeared on the television program as well as at children's birthday parties. His costume consisted of a white face, red nose, and mustache. This became a full-time position.

The company bought a van to use as a patrol wagon, with bars on the windows and a cop's hat and light on the top. The patrol wagon also had a horn with "Lookie, Lookie, Lookie" music. It was used in parades and children's programs.

The vocalists dressed as Keystone Cops, although they were actually business executives. They were quite popular in Christmas parades, sometimes performing in three a day. Children enjoyed the mini bikes and Figure 8 configurations, along with the slapstick comedy.

The parades provided good times and effective advertising for many years, but were discontinued in 1983. However, the Keystone Cop and Star remain the company's logo.

In 2005, a new Cookie the Cop Mascot arrived and makes appearances thoroughout the southeast.
